Meet Ms. Pollins

Sorry, that's not me. Turns out I don't really have many pictures of me on my computer! It's mostly pictures of my cats, Books and A'postrophe. But this is a pretty good picture of what I do with lots of my free time: hang around with books. Except I read them instead of sit on them, mostly. (Ironically, the cat sitting on that book is not Books, that's A'postrophe. Books actually doesn't really like sitting on books.)

When I'm not hanging around with books (or Books, or working) I'm probably running (I'm looking forward to running my third marathon next fall!), cooking, writing, relaxing on the couch with some good t.v. (yes, t.v. is okay in moderation!), or exploring Chicago neighborhoods and food with my husband.

I LOVE living in Chicago, but I haven't always lived here. I was born in Berlin, Germany and then grew up in Columbus, Ohio. I came to Chicago to go to the University of Chicago. I got my Bachelor's degree in Film Studies (got any questions about post-war German cinema or the aesthetic of film trailers? I can help!) and a Master's degree in Elementary Teaching.

I taught on the south side for 3 years and then I thought I'd give living in New York a try. While there I worked in a lovely bookstore and ran a story time and talked to people about kids' books all day and it was great! But, it turns out I just like Chicago WAY BETTER so I moved back and found my way back to the classroom and into Swift!

Since then I've earned my National Board Certification as a Middle Childhood Generalist and received my endorsements in math (pretty much just because), and teaching English Language learners.

This is my 9th year teaching at Swift (and my 12th year teaching!) and I love everything about our school, from the awesome kids to the fantastic other teachers and staff and the wonderful parents and community members that make Swift a great place to be.
